SOCIB contributes to the 4th edition of the Ocean State Report

SOCIB has contributed to the 4th edition of the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean State Report (OSR 4) in chapters 2, 3 and 4:

  • One contribution in Chapter 2, State, variability and change in the ocean: showing the promising approach for the monitoring of local particle retention conditions by applying a Lagrangian model on surface ocean current observations derived from HF radar and simulations in two different coastal areas, the South-East Bay of Biscay and the Ibiza Channel (section 2.8).
  • One contribution in Chapter 3 Case studies: presenting the assessment of the down-stream service IBISAR - www.ibisar.es - for Search and Rescue operators and marine emergency responders (section 3.4). Outcomes highlights the importance of a state-of-the-art skill assessment of all models available in a specific period of interest, since it can have a significant impact in minimising the response time, optimising search area planning, thus finally improving search and rescue and pollution control operations.
  • Two contributions in Chapter 4, Specific events in 2018: investigating the response of the coastal ocean circulation during an extreme event at the end of October 2018, causing extensive damage along the coast of the Ligurian Sea (section 4.8) and during the most extreme Ebro River discharge over the last 15 years observed in April 2018 in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea (section 4.10).

The OSR 4 published in 2020 provides information on changes and variations in the ocean over the past decades, with a focus on changes in the marine environment during the year 2018. It is written by 140 scientific experts from more than 30 institutions and draws from the marine monitoring capabilities of the Copernicus Marine Service.
