Join SOCIB at the 2021 Balearic Yacht Show
For the second year running, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) takes part in the Balearic Yacht Show, the only virtual yacht show in the Balearic Islands that brings together the main actors in the nautical industry worldwide. From June 3 to 6, public institutions, including SOCIB, international and national nautical companies and professionals, nautical users from all over the world, Balearic Islands and sea lovers, will come together in this event organised by the Mallorca Chamber of Commerce and the Balearic Marine Cluster. This year's edition will be joining forces with Palma International Boat Show to offer a full experience both online and offline, including diverse conferences and workshops.
On Saturday, 5 June, at 14:00 CEST, Aina García, marine scientist at SOCIB, will hold the virtual conference “Sustainability and nautical sector: how many boats can anchor on the Balearic coast?”. The conference will focus on recreational boating, one of the most important sectors within the tourist economy of the Balearic Islands. García will present the SOCIB spatial analysis of the nautical carrying capacity that allows establishing the physical limitations of the anchoring areas in the Balearic Islands, considering different spatial scenarios and anchoring hypotheses, while promoting sustainable development of the nautical sector. This analysis has been financed by Ports de les Illes Balears and Govern de les Illes Balears. The conference is free and those interested in attending must register at the event’s official website. Joaquín Tinotoré, director of SOCIB and co-author of the analysis, Aina García, and Pau Balaguer, both researchers at SOCIB and co-authors of the analysis, and Cristina Barahona, director of Ports de les Illes Balears, will be answering questions from the audience after the conference.
Furthermore, during the four-day event, SOCIB will feature the stand “SOCIB: researching the ocean, sharing the future” showcasing the main lines of action of this Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS) that works to advance the knowledge, understanding, and sustainable management of the ocean in the context of global change, as well as to develop oceanographic products and services to promote evidence-based marine and coastal management and support the blue economy.
